| The Blame Game |
|
Just the other day I was having a discussion with a peer and the subject of Deron Williams and Coach Jerry Sloan came up. As we all know, Coach Jerry Sloan "quit" or was said by many to have been forced out by Deron Williams. Well two weeks later Deron Williams was traded to the New Jersey Nets. This brings us to our topic this week. Blame. Alot of experts, analyst, players and fans would like to place the blame on Deron for coach Sloan's abrupt resignation. My question to you and everyone who agrees with this is .....Should blame be placed on anyone. With every facet of life there are expectations. From parenting to sports to relationships etc...When the expectations from these endeavors are not met what do we do. Do we blame others or do we (in the words of every athlete or politician that has been found guilty) take full responsibility for our actions. In any and every case we should first look at ourselves. The first question should go a little something like this, what could I have done differently or better to prevent this unwanted outcome. For example parents before we blame the coach as to why our team is horrific, look at little Johnny (or Sarah) and ask yourself, is my sweet little Johnny (or Sarah) skilled enough to execute the plays that the coach calls? Is little Johnny (or Sarah) just not following directives?Coaches are not exempt, either. Coaches must ask themselves "Have I prepared my team properly to beat a team that runs a flex offfense or pick and roll ?" I assure you that if we look at ourselves first, the blame will, in many cases, go no further than you. As for coach Jerry Sloan and Deron Williams. I think that Coach Sloan's coaching style was an exhausting style and he just got tired. Every player that was interviewed stated that he was a confrontational coach and we all know confrontation whether physical or verbal is exhausting. Could Deron have done somethings differently? That, I am almost certain. Could Coach Sloan have done things differently as well? I am pretty certain on that as well.
